Current Thinking on Drawdown and Alewives

Greetings,
As you all know, there have been numerous consultations with state and federal hydrologists, biologists, geologists and limnologists regarding the drought conditions’ effect on the lake water levels, well water levels and the fish ladder’s inability to accommodate the return of Alewives to the river to head back to the ocean.
After more discussion and feedback today from Nate Gray, Newport’s Fish and Wildlife biologist, it was decided to open the dam gate TOMORROW, OCTOBER 18, 2016 about 8 inches and draw the lake water level down to ONE FOOT BELOW THE TOP OF THE CONCRETE.
Hopefully this will provide enough impetus in the way of suction to move the Alewife fry out of the lake.  The town manager and the director of public works will wade down stream tomorrow to evaluate the condition of the baby fish in the river for damage.  There may be a significant fish kill from the suction of the water forcing the Alewife fry out of the lake through the dam opening.
Additionally, Nate will come on Monday and assess the situation and provide guidance regarding the use of a pump/hose system to flush out the fish ladder, which has such a low water level in it that the Alewife fry are prevented from getting out of the lake.
That is the result of today’s pow wow with the powers-that-be from the state and town office.
I will keep you posted about any changes…………..PRAY FOR RAIN.
Give a shout with any questions.
