March Message from SLA President

Once again, I must beseech all of you in the warm climate to NOT BE JEALOUS of us here in Newport. Last Tuesday we had the wildest rodeo of a snow storm that I can remember. The winds were sustained at 30-35 mph with gusts up to 55-60 mph.  Depending who you ask, we had 16-18 inches of snow.  I think I personally shoveled 3.5 feet, but then again, no one asked me how much snow I think we had. This winter is holding on for way longer than last winter did, but the first day of Spring is tomorrow, and hope springs eternal after all. Sixty residents attended town meeting which was a most civil event.  Lively discussion addressing two issues ensued regarding Retail Marijuana sales/Marijuana Social Clubs in town and the full time fire chief position. No Marijuana Social Clubs or Retail Marijuana Sales are allowed in Newport at this time.  This status quo will remain in place until more state legislative hearings and laws addressing regulation take place. The voters approved to fund a full time Fire Chief position for the town of Newport, an idea that was introduced at last year’s town meeting.  The dam gate is open wide and the water is low, but there is so much snow that I bet the lake level will be up to a desirable level in a week’s time once the gate is closed after ice out.  The water coming out of the lake is crystal clear…..I hope this bodes well for us this summer.

More soon, Muf

Wayne and Carol Whitaker have a house on the lake for rent this summer. Per Wayne: Two bed rooms ( upstairs) Full bath down and half bath upstairs.  Cape style house on the lake facing east. Great sunrises. Paved road with Town Water  on barrows point. One  could walk to town.  No pets and no smoking. Would prefer summer rental but year round would be considered.  Snow birds would be desired. Call 863.604.0215 for more information .
